A diesel mechanic is someone that performs preventative maintenance and repairs on diesel engines. They will often specialize in working with large trucks and buses, passenger vehicles, or heavy machinery. Diesel mechanics are valued for their expert knowledge when it comes to brake systems, transmissions, and electronic components that are unique to diesel-powered vehicles.

Diesel mechanics are sometimes required to perform maintenance checks on vehicles and machinery and will follow an inspection checklist, or fall back on their previous experience to make sure that everything is in good working order. If there are significant issues found during these inspections, mechanics will make notes and schedule all the repairs.

When repair work is deemed necessary, a diesel mechanic will assess the problem and order any replacement parts. Depending on the nature of the repair, the mechanic may have to use welding and cutting equipment, pneumatic tools, and many hand-held wrenches and screwdrivers. Once all the repairs have been completed, the mechanic will start the engine to ensure their repairs have done the job.

Most of the diesel engines today come equipped with electronic components and computer processors. So a diesel mechanic has to be proficient with computers and has a strong understanding of electronics. Diagnostic machines and computer software is often used to ensure all electronic parts are working as they should.

A majority of diesel mechanics work for either a truck transportation company or the manufacturing industry, performing maintenance on buses, large trucks, and heavy equipment. Some will work for construction and manufacturing corporations, where they will maintain and repair company machinery and vehicles.
